local info

bjorn to be wild

It’s difficult to ignore the world’s oldest tennis tournament when discussing Wimbledon. Watched the world over, www.wimbledon.com has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon since 1877 and is considered to be the most prestigious grand slam tennis tournament. Another sport has also drawn international fame to Wimbledon. A small, long-established non-League team, Wimbledon Football Club, quickly climbed through the ranks of the Football League during the eighties and went on to win the FA Cup against mighty Liverpool in 1988. The team currently play in League One.

Away from sport, New Wimbledon Theatre is a Grade II listed Edwardian theatre and is the premier theatrical venue in South West London. A short stroll away, dedicated exclusively to children, www.polkatheatre.com has seen over 90,000 adolescents through its doors to experience all the fun of the theatre, often for the first time. No visit to Wimbledon Common – home to our favourite fictional furry recyclers The Wombles – is complete without also calling in at www.wimbledonwindmill.org.uk. If all that activity makes you hungry and you don’t fancy cooking in your home from home apartment, then Holy Smoke, Ambience and The White Onion are just a few restaurants serving delicious food.
