the best places to hang out after work in… Woking

woking best places

The Jam’s Paul Weller once screamed that’s entertainment, and you will find plenty on offer in his home town of Woking. Within easy reach of some of Surrey’s most popular shopping areas and leisure attractions, our centrally located serviced apartments in Woking provide the perfect base to explore.

A 30-minute train journey will take you into the heart of London, but after a long day in the office, you might prefer a short stroll into town instead. So, where to? Luckily, we had a chat with Dan Sait, Football Editor at the Racing Football Outlook. He’s lived in and around Woking for most of his life and was more than happy to drop us some knowledge on Woking’s top hangouts.

Don’t worry, standing on the terraces at The Laithwaite Community Stadium on a cold and wet weekday evening hasn’t made the list. Although, with the team currently sitting atop the Vanarama National League South with a few games to go, and the women’s team occupying second spot in the Thames Valley Women’s Counties League, fans of football could do far worse.

Instead, ignore the “crushingly depressing late-night venues containing stag and hen parties” and visit these places.

A “good after-work pub”, The Ogilvy is as traditional as it gets, serving great food and ales. Boasting an extensive drinks menu, classic pub grub to suit everyone’s tastes, and live sport on the big screen, it’s the perfect place to chill out and take your mind off work. Wi-fi is available too, so if you really must, why not leave the office early and take advantage of flexible working?

The Sovereigns

If authentic British cooking and real ales beside a warm cosy fire is your thing, it’s time to visit The Sovereigns. Need a night off from your esa serviced apartment’s fully-fitted kitchen? Not a problem. Classic meals, award-winning ingredients, and seasonal specials are available, along with a hand-picked range of perfectly conditioned cask ales on tap. Alternatively, sample the selection of fine wines from around the world.

Cellar Magneval Wine Bar & Caveau

Cellar Magneval is a “really nice wine bar/café”, bringing you fine wines, aperitif, and its very own cheese trolley, all with a touch of Woking finesse. Take a breather during the day with a coffee, pop by for a quick drink before dinner, or just do what Dan would do, and stay there the whole evening. Cellar Magneval features a range of quality wines to suit palate and budget, including their ‘taste to discover’ wine, shrewdly available for takeaway at 50% discount.

Ambassadors Cinema

Located inside the Peacocks Centre, Ambassadors Cinema is a six-screen complex hosting the latest movies from around the world. Throughout the year, you can enjoy event screenings from a selection of the world’s most prestigious theatre, dance, and opera companies. Dan says, “ignore the sticky floors found in most cinemas these days and you’ll have a great time. At Christmas, you can play ‘guess the celeb’ during Panto season”.

Bird in Hand

An extensive renovation in late 2015 revived this pub to its former glory. Whether you fancy a quiet drink or unique dining experience, Bird in Hand has you covered. Situated in Myford, Woking, and voted top restaurant in Woking on TripAdvisor, enjoy various light lunches, small plates, sharing platters and exquisite main courses. Alternatively, simply indulge in an excellent range of lagers and real ales alongside a carefully crafted wine list. Worth two in the bush, indeed. Visit their website and take a virtual 360 tour here.
