Best places to eat in and around Newbury

top newbury restaurants blog

Are you staying in one of our Newbury serviced apartments? Maybe you’re new to this wonderful Berkshire market town and looking for a lively dining scene which offers inventive dishes, delicious local beers and plates full of creative flair. Your luck is in. Take a night off from cooking and enjoy some great food at these top places to eat in Newbury.

  1. Henry & Joe’s
Just over three minutes’ walk from Newbury Train Station, Henry & Joe’s exudes friendliness and comfort, welcoming everyone into their delightful restaurant. The plan was to make this bistro the kind of place where you would eat on your days off and return to repeatedly. Believe us, you will return. Warm and friendly, with delicious food using the highest quality British produce and local seasonal ingredients, it’s little wonder Henry & Joe’s is in our top five.
  1. The Woodspeen
A little further out of Newbury but worth the trip, The Woodspeen is outstanding. Boasting a restaurant and cookery school, set in a 19th-century farmhouse, if you’re a fan of seasonal dishes inspired by homegrown ingredients, you can’t go far wrong. They even have a Michelin star, not to mention an award-winning wine list and a super-relaxed atmosphere. Children are welcome as well, with a separate but equally yummy menu to make them feel part of the whole refreshingly unpretentious occasion.
  1. Lusso
Starting with a bright blue van on Northbrook Street, the team behind Lusso have come a long way. Tucked away down Weavers Walk, seconds away from their original home, Lusso knows what it’s good at and does it brilliantly. A gelateria merged with a pizza restaurant, using freshly prepared artisan products, this eatery is more laid back than a sloth on sedatives. Save room for the ice-cream – it’s out of this world.
  1. Catherine Wheel
It’s not all about the pies. Located in the centre of town, The Catherine Wheel was recently refurbished and is a fantastic place to go to. The large bar is massive for a reason. Boasting 34 beers and ciders on tap, the Catherine Wheel also has the largest bottled and canned craft and continental beer selection in Newbury. A separate gin menu flaunts 100 different gins, while their pies, including Kevin Vegan, Free Ranger and Deerstalker, are the focal point of most visits.
  1. The Newbury
With a British menu that regularly features in the Michelin Guide, The Newbury has it all. Enjoy the spacious bar area where – during the colder months – an open brick fire is the ideal place to gather. The Newbury supports local breweries and has 3 cask ales on tap, while the roof terrace has its own bar and serves cocktails and pizza from the pizza oven. Heated in the winter and a sun trap in the summer, the terrace is a fantastic place to eat and drink. The open kitchen reassuringly adds to its charm.
